Creativity is a habit – here’s how to build it

We all have that one creative friend. You know the one – they’re always trying new things like signing up for pottery classes, learning the guitar or making homemade candles just for fun.

A lot of people think creativity is something you’re either born with… or you’re not. And sure, some people are naturally more creative than others.

But here’s the thing most people don’t realise: creativity is something you can train, just like a muscle. The more you flex it, the stronger it gets. And the best part? You don’t need to spend hours “working it out” – you can build it bit by bit through your everyday life.

Switching up the routine

One of the easiest ways to spark creativity is to break out of your usual routine. Take a different route on your morning walk, listen to music you wouldn’t normally listen to, or here’s a super simple one – brush your teeth with the opposite hand.

This simple act of switching your teeth-brushing hand literally forces your brain to use the opposite hemispheres which builds and strengthens existing neural pathways and creates new ones. Studies show this can lead to better focus, memory and you guessed it… creativity!

If that sounds like too much effort, even drinking your coffee outside instead of at the kitchen table can shake things up. Creativity loves variety, and new experiences – no matter how small – have a way of waking up the brain.

Make time to play

Kids are naturally creative because they know how to play just for the fun of it. But as adults, we get caught up in doing things “properly,” which can kill creativity.

The trick is to give yourself permission to play again (maybe you remember us talking about this before in a previous newsletter? 👀)

Whatever your version of “play” is – it doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s about having fun, not getting it right.

Let yourself be bored

We’re so used to filling every spare moment with scrolling or watching something that we rarely give ourselves time to be bored. But boredom often sparks creativity.

It’s in those quiet moments when your mind is free to wander that the best ideas jump out at you. So, next time you’re waiting for the bus or folding your laundry, try to resist the urge to reach for your phone. Let your thoughts drift instead and see what happens!

TLDR…

Becoming more creative doesn’t happen overnight, so go easy on yourself and most importantly have some fun with it. Get a ‘lil silly! After all, life’s a lot more enjoyable when you make space for a little imagination.
